  • About

Jean de Wet is an illustrator whose practice spans multiple mediums. His work is distinguished by intricate, labyrinthine linework—graphic in style yet deeply rooted in the visual traditions of pre-digital image-making, such as relief printing. While firmly contemporary in execution, his drawings carry a sense of nostalgia, holding space for dualities: the psychic and the physical, humour and tragedy, the bitter and the sweet.

De Wet’s visual language was shaped early on by the punk scene, where he immersed himself as a high school garage-band musician. Punk’s DIY ethos left a lasting imprint on his creative process, instilling a fearless curiosity and a restless drive to experiment across mediums and formats. His practice remains in constant motion, encompassing projects that stretch from painting and music to unconventional, often playful contraptions. As he reflects: “There is something beautiful about discovering something new, testing it out and finally integrating the results into the larger context of your work.” His influences range widely—from the fantastical visions of Hieronymus Bosch to the refinement of Japanese printmaking and the irreverence of David Shrigley.

In 2019, de Wet embarked on a body of paintings derived from photographs, which he reinterpreted through a series of self-imposed creative constraints. This experiment gave rise to what he terms “graphic-impressionism,” a mode of working that continues to shape his art-making today. Within this evolving framework, he channels the natural world’s instinct to mutate and transform, continually folding new discoveries into the expanding terrain of his practice.
