    MJ Lourens was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1973 and studied Fine Art Sculpture at the University of Pretoria from 1992 to 1996.

    Lourens repositions the South African landscape as a psychologically charged space where memory, perception and place converge. His cinematic landscapes occupy a threshold between recognition and estrangement, transforming familiar environments through subtle surreal interventions, atmospheric light and peripheral forms.

    In Die Oorde van Woorde, this landscape becomes a place for language. Ten evocative Afrikaans words are placed within Lourens’ imagined terrains, exploring the relationship between sound, meaning, memory and belonging.

    The works celebrate the enduring beauty and expressive richness of Afrikaans while acknowledging the complex histories carried within it. Here, landscape becomes consciousness, and language becomes a means of connection — between place, memory and one another.
