Maxine Fitz-Patrick (b. 2001) is a South African artist working primarily in oil paint, with a focus on figurative portraiture. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from the University of Cape Town, where she studied under the supervision of prominent artist and educator Gretchen van der Byl. Fitz-Patrick’s work explores the constructed realities of so-called “glamorous” industries, particularly fashion and entertainment, drawing from her own formative experiences as a teenager working in the fashion world. Her paintings critique the polished façades and artificial ideals of beauty often portrayed in these spaces. Deeply inspired by artists such as Edward Povey, Fitz-Patrick is drawn to unusual expressions and the hidden emotional tensions behind composed appearances. Her subject, often models or actors, are depicted in moments that hover between beauty and discomfort, highlighting the strangeness of expressions shaped for the camera or stage. Upon closer inspection, these “perfect” faces reveal a more complex, often unsettling reality. A signature element of her recent work is the use of glitter layered over oil paint. This deliberate use of sparkle not only references the seductive visual language of fashion and pop culture but also serves as a metaphor for surface-level allure, inviting viewers to look past the shimmer and consider the more vulnerable, sometimes distorted truths beneath. Fitz-Patrick has participated in several group exhibitions and continues to build her career within the fine arts industry, using her practice to challenge conventional representations of beauty and identity.
